RESUMO

The bulk of knowledge on marine ciliates is from shallow and/or sunlit waters. We studied ciliate diversity and distribution across epi- and mesopelagic oceanic waters, using DNA metabarcoding and phylogeny-based metrics. We analyzed sequences of the 18S rRNA gene (V4 region) from 369 samples collected at 12 depths (0-1000 m) at the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study site of the Sargasso Sea (North Atlantic) monthly for 3 years. The comprehensive depth and temporal resolutions analyzed led to three main findings. First, there was a gradual but significant decrease in alpha-diversity (based on Faith's phylogenetic diversity index) from surface to 1000-m waters. Second, multivariate analyses of beta-diversity (based on UniFrac distances) indicate that ciliate assemblages change significantly from photic to aphotic waters, with a switch from Oligotrichea to Oligohymenophorea prevalence. Third, phylogenetic placement of sequence variants and clade-level correlations (EPA-ng and GAPPA algorithms) show Oligotrichea, Litostomatea, Prostomatea, and Phyllopharyngea as anti-correlated with depth, while Oligohymenophorea (especially Apostomatia) have a direct relationship with depth. Two enigmatic environmental clades include either prevalent variants widely distributed in aphotic layers (the Oligohymenophorea OLIGO5) or subclades differentially distributed in photic versus aphotic waters (the Discotrichidae NASSO1). These results settle contradictory relationships between ciliate alpha-diversity and depth reported before, suggest functional changes in ciliate assemblages from photic to aphotic waters (with the prevalence of algivory and mixotrophy vs. omnivory and parasitism, respectively), and indicate that contemporary taxon distributions in the vertical profile have been strongly influenced by evolutionary processes. Integration of DNA sequences with organismal data (microscopy, functional experiments) and development of databases that link these sources of information remain as major tasks to better understand ciliate diversity, ecological roles, and evolution in the ocean.

Ciliated protists represent one of the most primitive and diverse lineages of eukaryotes, with nuclear dimorphism, a distinctive sexual process (conjugation), and extensive genome rearrangements. Among divergent ciliate lineages, the peritrich order Sessilida includes members with a colonial lifestyle, which may hint to an independent evolutionary attempt for multicellularity, although they are still single-celled organisms. To date, the evolution and phylogeny of this group are still far from clear, in part due to the paucity of molecular and/or morphological data for many taxa. In this study, we extend taxon sampling of a loricate group of sessilids by obtaining 69 new rDNA (SSU rDNA, ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2, and LSU rDNA) sequences from 20 well-characterized representative species and analyze the phylogenetic relationships within Sessilida. The main findings are: (i) the genera Rhabdostyla and Campanella each represents a unique taxon at family level, supporting the establishment of two new families, i.e., Rhabdostylidae n. fam. and Campanellidae n. fam., respectively, the former being sister to a morphologically heterogeneous clade comprising Astylozoidae and several incertae sedis species and the latter occupying the basal position within the Sessilida clade; (ii) the structure of infundibular polykinety 3 is likely to be a phylogenetically informative character for resolving evolutionary relationships among sessilids; (iii) differences between sparsely and the densely arranged silverline systems could be a suprageneric taxonomic character; (iv) the monophyly of Vaginicolidae is confirmed, which is consistent with its specialized morphology, i.e., the possession of a typical peritrich lorica which might be an apomorphy for this group; (v) within Vaginicolidae, the monotypic Cothurniopsis sensu Stokes, 1893 is a synonym of Cothurnia Ehrenberg, 1831, and a new combination is created, i.e., Cothurnia valvata nov. comb.; (vi) Vaginicola sensu lato comprises at least two distinctly divergent clades, one affiliated with Thuricola and the other with a systematically puzzling clade represented by Vaginicola tincta.

In this study, we provided the morphological data and the first 18S rRNA gene data of Paratrichodina africana Kazubski and El-Tantawy, 1986, isolated from hybrids of Oreochromis niloticus × Oreochromis mossambicus in Chongqing, China. Morphologically, P. africana is mainly characterized by the triangular blade and prominent anterior projection. The present population is consistent with the original populations in the overall appearance of the adhesive disc, and falls within the morphometry range of the original descriptions. Phylogenetically, P. africana was clustered into one large clade with Trichodinella and Tripartiella species, which was nested within Trichodina ones with strong support. By combining morphological and molecular data, our results revealed that the validity of the genus Paratrichodina was doubtful, and suggested that the three genera Trichodinella, Tripartiella, and Paratrichodina should be incorporated into one independent genus. In addition, we provided morphological and molecular data of additional eight trichodinids, and further performed the phylogenetic analysis and traced the evolution history of trichodinids' five morphological and bionomical characters for the first time by taking advantage of the current GenBank data. According to the present results, one evolutionary hypothesis of trichodinids was proposed as follows. The most recent common ancestor of trichodinids inhabiting the freshwater environment as a symbiont of vertebrates should evolve from the ancestor with a long-spiral adoral ciliary turn. The first differentiated Trichodina species should be parasitic on one vertebrate distributed in the freshwater environment. During their evolution, some trichodinids expanded to the marine environment, and some switched to invertebrates in the freshwater environment. The denticle of some freshwater Trichodina species became narrower, and the adoral ciliary spiral turn got shorter, forming the ancestor-oid organism with a short-spiral adoral ciliary turn. Then, those Trichodinella, Tripartiella, and Paratrichodina species might evolve from those ancestor-oid organisms with short-spiral adoral ciliary turn.

Periphyton communities in freshwater systems play an essential role in biogeochemical processes, but knowledge of their structure and dynamics lags far behind other environments. We used eDNA metabarcoding of 16S and 18S rRNA markers to investigate the formation and establishment of a periphytic community, in addition to a morphology-based approach for peritrich ciliate determinations, its most abundant group. We sampled two nearby sites within a large Neotropical lake at four time points, aiming to assess whether periphyton establishment can be replicated on this local scale. Producers and denitrifiers were abundant in the community, illustrating the relevant role of biofilms in freshwater nutrient recycling. Among microeukaryotes, peritrich ciliates dominated the community, with genera Epistylis and Vorticella being the most abundant and showing a clear succession at both sites. Other ciliates were morphologically identified and, in some cases, their occurrence was strongly related to bacterial abundance. The structure of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic components of periphyton was not different, while the turnover dynamics differed between the two sites, in spite of their adjacent locations and similar abiotic properties. This indicates that the establishment of these communities can vary even on a local scale within a lake ecosystem.

Miamiensis avidus is a parasitic pathogen that causes the disease scuticociliatosis in teleost fish species. It is a ciliate and a free-living marine protozoan belonging to the order Philasterida, subclass Scuticociliatida, class Oligohymenophorea, and phylum Ciliophora. The complete mt-genome of M. avidus was linear and 38,695 bp in length with 47 genes, including 40 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and five transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. Of these, 20 genes typically belong to the clusters of orthologous groups, playing roles in energy production and conversion, translation, ribosomal structure and biogenesis, and defense mechanisms. This is the first report of sequencing and characterization of the mt-genome of M. avidus, which was observed to be linear and possessing the typical ciliate mitochondrial genome organization and phylogenetic relationships. Remarkable differences were observed between M. avidus and other ciliates in the mitochondrially encoded rRNAs, extensive gene loss in ribosomal genes and tRNAs, terminal repeat sequences, and stop codon usage. A comparative and phylogenetic analysis of M. avidus and Uronema marinum of the order Hymenostomatida, which is most closely related to the order Philasterida, signified the promise of the mitogenome data of M. avidus as a valuable genetic marker in species detection and taxonomic research. The present study has potential applications in epidemiological studies and host-parasite interaction investigations facilitating disease control.

The morphology and molecular phylogeny of three freshwater scuticociliates, Variuronema elegans gen. nov., spec. nov. (type species), V. similis spec. nov. and Uronema rigidum spec. nov., collected from Qixing River Wetland, northeastern China, were investigated using live observation and silver carbonate staining methods; the phylogenetic placements were inferred from the small subunit rRNA gene. Variuronema gen. nov., assigned to the family Uronematidae, is distinguished from the other genera mainly by its membranelles 1 and 2, each consisting of four longitudinal rows of kinetids, and the paroral membrane extending anteriorly to the front part of membranelle 3. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that: (1) Variuronema spp. form an independent, fully supported clade. However, its position among other uronematids is unresolved. (2) The family Uronematidae is not monophyletic based on the SSU rRNA gene, which is in accordance with previous studies.

In the present study, a new freshwater peniculid species, Frontonia apoelegans sp. nov., and two other peniculid species, Frontonia atra (Ehrenberg, 1833) Bütschli, 1889 and Stokesia vernalis Wenrich, 1929, were isolated from Lake Weishan wetland, northern China. Their morphology and infraciliature are described based on live observations and silver staining methods. The SSU rRNA gene sequences are also provided. Frontonia apoelegans sp. nov. is recognized by the following combination of characteristics: two contractile vacuoles located right-dorsally, without collecting canals; peniculi 1 and 2 four-rowed, peniculus 3 three-rowed with leftmost row containing only one kinetosome; 62-76 somatic kineties; three ophryokineties; and four or five postoral kineties. We also provide improved diagnoses for Frontonia atra and Stokesia vernalis based on current and previous reports. Comparisons with sequences of morphologically similar species clearly support the validity of the new species. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequence data reveal that Frontonia species with two contractile vacuoles cluster in a single clade, indicating these species may have a common origin. The family Frontoniidae is non-monophyletic whereas the family Stokesiidae remains monophyletic according to our analyses.

During an investigation of parasitic ciliates in northern China, two Trichodina species, T. acuta Lom, 1970 and T. nigra Lom, 1960, were isolated from the freshwater fish Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus, 1758. The morphology of each species was investigated based on dry silver nitrate-stained specimens. In addition, the molecular phylogeny of each was analyzed based on small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) sequence data. Trichodina acuta can be distinguished from its congeners by the undefined periphery of the central circle, the distinct gap between the rays and the central circle, and the distinctly sickle-shaped blades. Trichodina nigra is a cosmopolitan ciliate and is characterized by its densely linked denticles, broad, rounded spatula-shaped blades, robust central parts, and well developed rays. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that T. acuta and T. nigra nest within different clades, supporting the assertion that the GC content of SSU rDNA sequences could reflect evolutionary relationships among Trichodina species.

During a survey of parasitic ciliates in Chongqing, China, Trichodina matsu Basson Van As, 1994 was isolated from gills of Tachysurus fulvidraco. Furthermore, the 18S rRNA gene and ITS-5.8S rRNA region of T. matsu were sequenced for the first time and applied for the species identification and comparison with similar species in the present study. Based on the morphological and molecular comparisons, the results indicate that T. matsu is an ectoparasite specific for the Siluriformes catfish. Based on the analyses of genetic distance, multiple sequence alignments, and phylogenetic analyses, no obvious differentiation within populations of T. matsu was found. In addition, the 'Trichodina hyperparasitis (KX904933) in GenBank is a misidentification and appears to be conspecific with T. matsu according to the comparison of morphological and molecular data.

Loxocephalids represent a nonmonophyletic assemblage of oligohymenophorean ciliates with morphological features common to both scuticociliates (mode of ontogenesis) and hymenostomes (morphology of the oral structures). In phylogenetic analyses that include both nuclear and mitochondrial molecular markers, relationships among loxocephalid ciliates are still largely unresolved. With the aim to clarify the phylogeny of the controversial order Loxocephalida Jankowski, 1980, we provide the first 18S rRNA gene sequences of three morphologically well-described ciliates currently included in the order, namely Cinetochilum margaritaceum, Zitheron hovassei, and Zitheron muscorum comb. nov. We also provide the first 18S rRNA gene sequence for the monotypic genus Urozona. Here we present improved diagnoses for these species based on updated morphologic data. Our molecular data circumscribe the family Cinetochilidae Perty, 1852 and support the exclusion of genus Cinetochilides from family Cinetochilidae; therefore, we establish a family Cinetochilididae fam. nov. We consider Urozona as incertae sedis in Oligohymenophorea at the current state of knowledge.

A new hymenostomatid ciliate, Anteglaucoma orientalis n. sp., isolated from a freshwater pond in Harbin, northeastern China, was investigated using live observation and silver staining methods. Anteglaucoma orientalis is characterized as follows: size in vivo about 50-60 × 30-35 µm; oval body shape; buccal area occupies about 25% of body length; 28-36 somatic kineties; membranelle 1 having six or seven basal body rows, membranelle 2 five to seven rows, and membranelle 3 three rows; single macronucleus with one micronucleus attached. Morphogenesis of the genus Anteglaucoma is revealed for the first time. The main events during binary fission are as follows: morphogenesis begins with proliferation of kinetosomes in the middle part of postoral kinety 1, and kinetosomes of this primordial field multiply and organize to finally form the paroral membrane and membranelles 1-3 of the opisthe; the parental apparatus in the proter does not take part in the stomatogenetic process. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rRNA gene sequences show that Anteglaucoma orientalis n. sp. clusters with the type species, A. harbinensis Pan et al., 2017, with full support.

In the present study, we provided the first 18S rRNA gene sequence data of two Tripartiella species, Tripartiella macrosoma Basson and Van As, 1987 and Tripartiella obtusa Ergens and Lom, 1970, which were isolated from Tachysurus fulvidraco (Richardson, 1846) and Hemibarbus maculatus Bleeker, 1871 in Chongqing, China, respectively. Morphologically, both species fall within the morphometry range of the original descriptions and are very similar to the original populations in the overall appearance of the adhesive disc. Tripartiella macrosoma can be easily distinguished from the other Tripartiella species by possessing the denticle with a long strip and conspicuously inclined backward blade and a robust and short ray. Tripartiella obtusa is mainly characterized by a broad blade and a relatively long ray. Phylogenetically, T. macrosoma clustered with Trichodinella myakkae (Mueller, 1937) Raabe, 1950 and further with Trichodinella sp., which was sister to a group that includes four populations of Trichodinella epizootica (Raabe, 1950) Srámek-Husek, 1953; finally, they formed a small clade with T. obtusa. This result suggested that T. macrosoma had a closer relationship with Trichodinella spp. than with T. obtusa and T. obtusa diverged earlier than T. macrosoma and Trichodinella spp. By combining morphological and molecular data, the polyphyletic characteristics of Tripartiella and Trichodinella were further analyzed, and the results revealed that the validity of the genus Tripartiella is doubtful.

Scuticociliatosis, caused by ciliated protozoa of the subclass Scuticociliatia, has been associated with high mortalities in marine fish. Environmental factors such as an increase in water temperature can enhance this disease. The aim of the present report is to describe the occurrence of a cluster of cases of scuticociliatosis in a multispecies marine cold-water system in a public aquarium. Philasterides dicentrarchi was identified by PCR in formalin-fixed tissues of some of the fish showing meningitis or meningoencephalitis, dermatitis and myositis with intralesional protozoa. An increase in water temperature of approximately 2°C was identified as a potential contributing factor for this cluster of infections. Higher temperature may have enhanced the propagation or pathogenicity of scuticociliates or increased host susceptibility of some species of fish, especially wolf-eel Anarrhichthys ocellatus and spotted ratfish Hydrolagus colliei. This report also highlights the complexity of dealing with mixed species systems housing fish from different natural ecozones.

The peritrich genus Epistylis is speciose, however many species lack complete morphological description based on modern criteria and/or molecular data. In the present study, one new species, i.e., E. foissneri n. sp., and two morphologically similar species, i.e., E. hentscheli Kahl, 1935 and E. vaginula Stokes, 1884, collected from freshwater habitats in China, were studied. Epistylis foissneri n. sp. is characterized by its extremely slender zooids encased in a gelatinous sheath, symmetrically dichotomously branched stalk, trochal band located at mid-body, contractile vacuole located on dorsal wall of infundibulum, infundibular polykinety 3 (P3) composed of three equal-length rows that terminate above infundibular polykinety 1 (P1), 105-110 silverlines between the peristome and the trochal band, and about 110 silverlines between the trochal band and the scopula. Epistylis hentscheli is characterized by its asymmetric pyriform zooids (average length ca. 160 µm in vivo), dichotomously branched stalk with transverse striations on the surface of the upper portion, P3 three-rowed and terminating slightly above P1, 60-75 silverlines between the peristome and the trochal band, and 55-90 silverlines between the trochal band and the scopula. Epistylis vaginula is characterized by its elongated body shape (about 100 µm in length in vivo), dichotomously branched and smooth stalk, P3 three-rowed and terminating above P1, 80-100 silverlines between the peristome and the trochal band, and 45-80 silverlines between the trochal band and the scopula. The small subunit ribosomal DNA gene (SSU rDNA) of these three species was sequenced and supported the validity of each. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequence data revealed that all three morphospecies group with other congeners within the major clade of Epistylis.

The evolutionary relationships among Oligohymenophorea subclasses are under debate as the phylogenomic analysis using a large dataset of nuclear coding genes is significantly different to the 18S rDNA phylogeny, and it is unfortunately not stable within and across different published studies. In addition to nuclear genes, the faster-evolving mitochondrial genes have also shown the ability to solve phylogenetic problems in many ciliated taxa. However, due to the paucity of mitochondrial data, the corresponding work is scarce, let alone the phylogenomic analysis based on mitochondrial gene dataset. In this work, we presented the characterization on Thuricola similis Bock, 1963, a loricate peritrich (Oligohymenophorea), incorporating mitogenome sequencing into integrative taxonomy. As the first mitogenome for the subclass Peritrichia, it is linear, 38,802 bp long, and contains two rRNAs, 12 tRNAs, and 43 open reading frames (ORFs). As a peculiarity, it includes a central repeated region composed of tandemly repeated A-T rich units working as a bi-transcriptional start. Moreover, taking this opportunity, the phylogenomic analyses based on a set of mitochondrial genes were also performed, revealing that T. similis, as a representative of Peritrichia subclass, branches basally to other three Oligohymenophorea subclasses, namely Hymenostomatia, Peniculia, and Scuticociliatia. Evolutionary relationships among those Oligohymenophorea subclasses were discussed, also in the light of recent phylogenomic reconstructions based on a set of nuclear genes. Besides, as a little-known species, T. similis was also redescribed and neotypified based on data from two populations collected from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Brazil and Italy, by means of integrative methods (i.e., living observation, silver staining methods, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and 18S rDNA phylogeny). After emended diagnosis, it is characterized by: (1) the sewage habitat; (2) the lorica with a single valve and small undulations; (3) the 7-22 µm-long inner stalk; and (4) the presence of only a single postciliary microtubule on the left side of the aciliferous row in the haplokinety. Among Vaginicolidae family, our 18S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that Thuricola and Cothurnia are monophyletic genera, and Vaginicola could be a polyphyletic genus.

Dark Leathery Surface of Geoduck Clams (LSGC) is an alteration that affects the periostracum of the mantle and siphon of Panopea generosa from the northwest coast of Canada and Mexico. This alteration affects commercialization and possibly the survival of the clams. The cause of LSGC is unknown but has been correlated with presence of fungi and protozoans. We detected a similar alteration in Panopea globosa from Baja California, Mexico and the histophagous ciliate Uronema marinum was isolated from affected siphon tissue. U. marinum was identified by its morphology and by genetic analysis of the gene 18S rRNA. This is the first record of LSGC in P. globosa and the first identification of a histophagous protozoan associated with it.

Peniculids comprise a large order of ciliated protists in Class Oligohymenophorea having many unresolved evolutionary relationships. Herein, we report 27 new sequences, including 18S rRNA, ITS1-5.8S- ITS2 rRNA, 28S rRNA and the mitochondrial cox1 genes of eight peniculids. We conducted phylogenetic analyses based on each these markers and on a four-gene concatenated data set (18S rRNA, ITS1-5.8S- ITS2 rRNA, 28S rRNA, and cox1 gene). The main findings are: 1) subclass Peniculia and family Parameciidae are monophyletic, with genus Frontonia remaining non-monophyletic; 2) Urocentrids have traditionally been regarded as a family, multi-gene analyses support the rank of Urocentrida and consistently recovers this order as sister to Peniculida, and Urocentrida and Peniculida comprise subclass Peniculia in agreement with Lynn's (2008) classification; 3) discrepancies between multiple-gene phylogenies, and conflicts with morphologic data regarding genus Frontonia necessitate expansion and revision of species diagnoses and we propose consideration of Group III of Frontonia (including F. didieri, F. ocularis, F. anatolica, F. pusilla and F. elegans) as incertae sedis in Peniculida; 4) multi-gene analyses of Parameciidae support five previously established subgenera. Paramecium buetschlii is placed in subgenus Chloroparamecium, and P. chlorelligerum into subgenus Viridoparamecium.

With highly specialized morphology and unexplored functional capacities, ciliates from extreme habitats are drawing increasing attention. During a microbial investigation of a solar saltern pond (salinity 240‰) on Mallorca, Spain, a previously unknown scuticociliate, Platynematum rossellomorai n. sp. was isolated, cultured and studied using a tripartite approach consisting of a morphological description, a molecular analysis and an ecophysiological characterization. The ciliate has distinct morphological characteristics and its main diagnostic features include a large anteriorly positioned oral area (occupying almost half of the body length), two caudal cilia and a small number of somatic kineties. However, due to the most important generic feature of Cinetochilidae, the consistency of the arrangement of the adoral membranes, the ciliate is classified as a new member of the genus Platynematum. Its 18S rRNA gene sequence shows a sequence similarity of 91.0% to the closest deposited relative, Platynematum salinarum, and a phylogenetic analysis reveals a close relationship to other members of the family Cinetochilidae Perty, 1852. Growth experiments identify the ciliate as a borderline halophile, with a tolerance range between 180 and 280‰ salinity. The ciliate apparently accumulates the compatible solutes glycine betaine and ectoine to counterbalance osmotic stress, however, other osmoregulatory mechanisms are not excluded.

A disease outbreak occurred in swimming crab (Portunus trituberculatus) farmed in eastern China, with a mortality rate of more than 80%. To further investigate the characteristics and pathogenesis, we reported isolation, characterization and virulence of the causative agent of this disease from 10 sick crabs. Histopathological observation found that multiple tissues, especially haemolymph, contained lots of ciliates. The ciliate was isolated and cultured in vitro, and molecular and morphological studies were done. The results showed that SSU rDNA and LSU rDNA sequences of the ciliate were similar to Mesanophrys ciliates (>96.81%), while ITS1-5.8s-ITS2 sequence was similar to Mesanophrys pugettensis (95.37%) and identical to Orchitophrya stellarum (100%). Furthermore, the results of the morphological study confirmed that the ciliate was similar to Mesanophrys ciliates and O. stellarum cultured in supportive media, but different from O. stellarum cultured in living sperm cells of starfish (Leptasterias spp.). Also, the growth of the ciliate did not interfere with light, which was different from O. stellarum. Accordingly, the ciliate was classified as genus Mesanophrys and temporarily named as Mesanophrys sp. In addition, experimental infection confirmed that Mesanophrys sp. was the pathogen that infected farmed crabs. In summary, Mesanophrys sp. was first isolated and characterized in P. trituberculatus.

Philasterides dicentrarchi is a marine benthic microaerophilic scuticociliate and an opportunistic endoparasite that can infect and cause high mortalities in cultured turbot (Scophthalmus maximus). In addition to a cytochrome pathway (CP), the ciliate can use a cyanide-insensitive respiratory pathway, which indicates the existence of an alternative oxidase (AOX) in the mitochondrion. Although AOX activity has been described in P. dicentrarchi, based on functional assay results, genetic evidence of the presence of AOX in the ciliate has not previously been reported. In this study, we conducted genomic and transcriptomic analysis of the ciliate and identified the AOX gene and its corresponding mRNA. The AOX gene (size 1,106 bp) contains four exons and three introns that generate an open reading frame of 915 bp and a protein with a predicted molecular weight of 35.6 kDa. The amino acid (aa) sequence of the AOX includes an import signal peptide targeting the mitochondria and the protein is associated with the inner membrane of the mitochondria. Bioinformatic analysis predicted that the peptide is a homodimeric glycoprotein, although monomeric forms may also appear under native conditions, with EXXH motifs associated with the diiron active centers. The aa sequences of the AOX of different P. dicentrarchi isolates are highly conserved and phylogenetically closely related to AOXs of other ciliate species, especially scuticociliates. AOX expression increased significantly during infection in the host and after the addition of CP inhibitors. This confirms the important physiological roles of AOX in respiration under conditions of low levels of O2 and in protecting against oxidative stress generated during infection in the host.
